Sienna Blackwood was born on the 14th of April, 1984, in Hobart, Tasmania, to parents Charles and Evelyn Blackwood. Alexander, a renowned cardiologist, and Alice, a dedicated school teacher, nurtured a love for learning and a strong sense of justice in their daughter from a young age. Growing up in the scenic suburb of Sandy Bay, Sienna was an inquisitive child with a keen interest in stories of heroism and justice, often inspired by her father's tales of historical figures and her mother's commitment to education.
Sienna attended Sandy Bay Primary School from 1990 to 1996, where her natural curiosity and intelligence quickly became apparent. She excelled in her studies and was known for her leadership qualities and compassionate nature. Moving on to St. Mary's College in Hobart for her secondary education, Sienna continued to shine academically, particularly in English, History, and Legal Studies. She was an active member of the debate team and the student council, honing her skills in argumentation and leadership.
In 2002, Sienna enrolled at the University of Tasmania, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology. Her undergraduate years were marked by a deep dive into the complexities of criminal behaviour, forensic psychology, and the intricacies of the criminal justice system. Graduating in 2006, she decided to further her education with a Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice, also at the University of Tasmania, which she completed in 2008. This period solidified her understanding of legal procedures and enforcement protocols, setting a strong foundation for her future career.
Eager to apply her knowledge and skills, Sienna joined Tasmania Police as a Police Constable in 2008. Her early years in general duties saw her responding to emergency calls and patrolling various neighbourhoods, where she quickly earned a reputation for her dedication and thoroughness. By 2010, she had transitioned to the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) in Hobart as a Detective Constable, where she worked on cases involving theft, assault, and domestic violence. Her analytical skills and attention to detail made her an invaluable asset to her team.
In 2012, Sienna was promoted to Detective Senior Constable, where she led investigations into major theft and burglary cases. Her ability to solve complex cases efficiently did not go unnoticed, and in 2014, she became a Detective Sergeant. In this role, she managed a team of detectives, coordinated investigations, and tackled complex cases, including homicides and organised crime. Her leadership and commitment to justice continued to distinguish her within the Tasmania Police.
Seeking to deepen her expertise, Sienna pursued a Master of Criminology and Criminal Justice at the University of Melbourne, which she completed between 2010 and 2012. This advanced education equipped her with specialised knowledge in criminal investigation techniques and forensic methods, further enhancing her capabilities as an investigator.
By 2016, Sienna had risen to the rank of Detective Inspector at Hobart CIB, where she took on high-profile cases and played a crucial role in solving significant crimes. One such case was the Cody Jennings murder investigation, which began in August 2018. On the 2nd of August, she arrived at the crime scene, bringing her expertise and methodical approach to the investigation. Her leadership was instrumental in navigating the complex web of evidence and suspects.
Sienna's dedication to her work is matched by her commitment to mentoring junior officers, helping them develop the skills and resilience needed for effective policing. Her efforts have contributed to building a cohesive and capable team within the Hobart CIB.
Outside of her demanding career, Sienna finds solace in her family and hobbies. She is married to Theodore Rankin, a marine biologist, and they have two children, Skye, born in 2014, and Henry, born in 2017. The family resides in the serene suburb of Mount Nelson, where they enjoy exploring the natural beauty of Tasmania through hiking and beach outings.
Sienna is also an avid reader and enjoys delving into historical novels and true crime books. Her interest in history and justice extends beyond her professional life, often leading her to participate in local historical society events and discussions. Additionally, she practices yoga regularly, finding it a perfect way to maintain balance and mental clarity amidst the rigours of her job.
