Dr. Finn Montgomery, an esteemed emergency physician at the Royal Hobart Hospital, is renowned for his expertise in trauma management and crisis response. With a career marked by significant achievements in both clinical practice and medical education, Finn's dedication to patient care and mentorship has earned him widespread respect within the medical community. Married to paediatrician Kaitlyn Foster and a father of two, he balances his professional life with a passion for the outdoors and classical music.
Dr. Finn Montgomery, born on 14 July 1982 in Hobart, Tasmania, has carved a remarkable career as an emergency physician. His journey began in a family steeped in the medical profession; his father, Dr. Alistair Montgomery, was a renowned cardiologist, and his mother, Margaret Montgomery (née Collins), a dedicated nurse. The youngest of three children, Finn grew up in a household where discussions of patient care and medical advancements were commonplace.
From an early age, Finn displayed a keen interest in the sciences, often accompanying his father on weekend rounds at the local hospital. This early exposure to the medical world sparked a passion that would guide his future career. A bright student, Finn excelled academically at Hutchins School, a prestigious independent school in Hobart, where he graduated as dux in 2000.
Finn pursued his higher education at the University of Tasmania, enrolling in the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme in 1998. His time at university was marked by both academic excellence and active involvement in extracurricular activities. He was a prominent member of the University Medical Society and volunteered with the university’s rural health initiative, providing much-needed medical support to remote Tasmanian communities.
After graduating with honours in 2004, Finn embarked on his internship and residency at the Royal Hobart Hospital. These formative years saw him rotating through various departments, including general medicine, surgery, paediatrics, and emergency medicine. His dedication and skill did not go unnoticed; in 2006, he was awarded the Intern of the Year for his exceptional performance and commitment to patient care.
Keen to specialise, Finn pursued a Master of Emergency Medicine at Monash University from 2007 to 2010. During this period, he focused on trauma management and emergency medical procedures, conducting pivotal research on the impact of rapid response teams in emergency departments. His findings were published in several esteemed medical journals, earning him recognition within the medical community.
In 2011, Finn achieved Fellowship of the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (FACEM), marking a significant milestone in his career. His fellowship training included advanced courses in disaster medicine and pre-hospital care, areas in which he would later make significant contributions.
Returning to the Royal Hobart Hospital as a Senior Registrar in 2010, Finn quickly established himself as a leader. By 2013, he was appointed a Consultant Emergency Physician, and in 2016, he became the Head of the Emergency Department. His tenure has been marked by numerous achievements, including the introduction of advanced trauma life support (ATLS) courses for staff and the hospital's response to several mass casualty incidents, demonstrating his exceptional leadership and crisis management skills.
Outside the hospital, Finn is a clinical lecturer at the University of Tasmania, where he teaches emergency medicine to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. His commitment to education and mentorship is well-regarded, with many of his students going on to achieve significant success in their own medical careers.
Finn's personal life is as fulfilling as his professional one. He married Kaitlyn Foster, a paediatrician, in 2010. The couple has two children, Sophie (born 2012) and Thomas (born 2015). The Montgomery family resides in a charming heritage home in Battery Point, a historic suburb of Hobart, where they enjoy the close-knit community and scenic views of the Derwent River.
An avid outdoorsman, Finn spends his free time hiking in the Tasmanian wilderness, a passion that he shares with his family. He is also a skilled sailor, often taking to the waters of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel on weekends. His interest in music, particularly classical piano, provides a creative outlet and a means of relaxation from the high-stress environment of the emergency department.
